When the movers and shakers of Washington, DC were gearing up in the fall of 2019 to support their respective parties and elected officials, and rally the voters, the Indian American IMPACT Fund was getting its annual IMPACT Summit underway. The I AM IMPACT Summit is sponsored by the IMPACT Project, which is a nonpartisan arm of the Indian American IMPACT Fund, with the goal to encourage “Indian Americans to seek a life in public service and help build a more diverse and inclusive democracy that improves the lives of all Americans.” The I AM IMPACT – I(ndian) A(mericans)M(aking) IMPACT – Summit was a project that sought to bring together leaders, voters, candidates, philanthropists, community leaders, and political strategists from across the country to share ideas, engage in dialogue, support candidate training, discuss current events, present historic viewpoints, and network. For this project, I created the I AM IMPACT logo using the original IMPACT logo, incorporating it onto imagery of the capital building to create the 2019 Summit identity, and designed the registration page for the event using their event web host, Strikingly.

2019 OST: The Temple pOST Bulletin

By the end of 2018, Ohef Sholom Temple’s monthly newsletter, The Temple pOST Bulletin, was in need of a fresh update. The Bulletin’s previous incarnation was that of a dull monochromatic blue with black print, and I felt that a full color spectrum would liven the design and make the publication easier to navigate visually. The full color redesign really elevated the publication’s quality, professionalism, readability, and energy, modernizing the identity of the Temple itself. With a new contemporary look and feel, the beginning of 2019 witnessed Ohef Sholom Temple’s Temple pOST Bulletin publication transition from an old second-rate “church-style” newsletter to a beautiful 16-20 page mini-magazine, with each cover carefully chosen and designed to reflect the highlight of each month’s upcoming events and/or holidays.

By 2019, the Ohef Sholom Temple website was in desperate need of an upgrade, so along with our web hosting team, I began the huge undertaking of completely redesigning and streamlining the Temple’s entire website, moving it from a Joomla-based build to a WordPress site. Countless hours of research, organization, reorganization, scrubbing old information, layout design, and content gathering & editing went into this massive redesign. To this day, it’s still a constantly evolving project needing weekly updates, and is especially so, having to adapt its design on the fly in the face of a pandemic.

The bulletin icons were created to compliment the sections of the Temple’s monthly bulletin publication, The Temple pOST Bulletin, which was also redesigned from a blue monochromatic color scheme to full color, so it could be delivered as a full-color paperless publication via email or accessible on our website and in full color by print to those who opted out of the paperless version. These icons compliment the color schemes that subtly coincide with corresponding sections of our website and bulletin.

2019 OST: 175th Anniversary Gala

In honor of 175 years of Ohef Sholom Temple, leadership, clergy and committee chairs fashioned a formal gala event to celebrate such a huge milestone in the congregation’s history. It was a golden event complete with live music, dinner, dancing, a raffle for exquisite prizes, a fancy cake, an ice sculpture, private label wine, and many more small touches that make such an event truly special. Using the pre-established logo for “We of Ohef Sholom,” I turned the logo golden, giving it a reflective metallic golden gradient and set it between the most recognizable symbols of the Temple: it’s unmistakeable Ionic pillars that line the entrance to the Sanctuary. With the pillars wrapped in golden ribbon and surrounded with gold, silver and bronze bits of “confetti” falling all around, the identity for Ohef Sholom Temple’s 175th Anniversary Gala was born.

Celebrating a congregation that is 175 years old also means celebrating a future and ensuring that there will still be an Ohef Sholom Temple for future generations. The Temple President organized a Capital Fundraising Campaign in honor of the 175th Anniversary of Ohef Sholom Temple, with a goal to raise $1.75 million for future capital needs, building improvements, programming and staffing. The campaign had it’s own identity, complete with imagery, a webpage, stationery, and ads.

2019 OST: A Misérable Purimshpiel

During the Purim holiday, the largest, most anticipated production of the year is Ohef Sholom Temple’s annual Purimshpiel Dinner Theatre. Every year, a different musical, play, or theme is chosen to parody the re-telling of the Book of Esther, complete with songs that spoof the originals, while accentuating each scene with ensuing hilarity and good fun for all ages. A great “beauty pageant” is held in Esther’s honor during the play, so people – especially the kids – dress up in costume for the holiday and participate with the production.

2019’s Purimshpiel theme was to Les Misérables, calling it A Misérable Purimshpiel not because it was miserable (Purim is actually a very fun, happy, good-natured holiday) but for two reasons: 1) to parody the original Les Misérables musical and 2) because the lead actress portraying the main character Esther, was actually pregnant during the time of production (could be miserable, right?). In the tradition of parody, I did a re-creation of the Broadway playbill imagery for Les Mis, changing out the French flag with an Israeli flag, and using a stylized photo of our own “Queen Esther” in place of the character Cosette. Admittedly, this is always one of my favorite assignments to design for, as I am usually given the freedom to have as much outlandish, punny fun as I like with the designs, while delivering a nod to the original. This is one of the few instances in design where tackier is better – and it’s always amusing!

Every year during the Purim holiday, the Ohef Sholom Temple Youth (OSTY) Group holds a Purim Carnival fundraiser. Since this particular year’s Purim festivities fell on St. Patrick’s Day, the client wanted the design to be a Jewish twist on “luck,” encouraging patrons to “Try your mazel…” (mazel meaning luck or good fortune) among a Carnival-style marquee and backdrop with gold coins.

For each new family member that comes into our congregants’ lives, Ohef Sholom Temple sends the family members a box welcoming their new addition, which includes prayer cards for the child. I redesigned these cards with elements of baby imagery along with coinciding Hebrew wishes and prayers for a girl or for a boy.
