Every year during the Purim holiday, the Ohef Sholom Temple Youth (OSTY) Group holds a Purim Carnival fundraiser. Since this particular year’s Purim festivities fell on St. Patrick’s Day, the client wanted the design to be a Jewish twist on “luck,” encouraging patrons to “Try your mazel…” (mazel meaning luck or good fortune) among a Carnival-style marquee and backdrop with gold coins.

For each new family member that comes into our congregants’ lives, Ohef Sholom Temple sends the family members a box welcoming their new addition, which includes prayer cards for the child. I redesigned these cards with elements of baby imagery along with coinciding Hebrew wishes and prayers for a girl or for a boy.

One of the most socially active clubs at Ohef Sholom Temple involves the lovely women of Ohef Sholom Temple: the OST Sisterhood. This group of women loves to join together give back to their congregation, their community, and investing in themselves through enrichment programs such as lectures, book readings, informational gatherings, self-defense, social justice initiatives, cooking for those who may be experiencing food insecurity, quilting, crafting, and assisting with scholarships, religious school or worship services.

The phrase tikkun olam in Hebrew means “repairing the world,” and has come to represent acts of kindness in support of social actions and justice. At Ohef Sholom Temple, EcoJudaism initiatives are a big part of their tikkun olam programming, creating awareness locally that contributes globally. From eco film festivals to whale watching, to plastic collection for TREX benches, to backyard and butterfly gardening, to local clean waterways initiatives, I have been honored to design multiple forms of publicity for the various EcoJudaism programs offered through Ohef Sholom Temple.

For Ohef Sholom Temple’s 175th Anniversary and 100th Anniversary of the Sanctuary, the congregation created a legacy project to document oral history, family stories, anecdotes, memorable moments, and basically create a living snapshot of this moment in time through 3-minute digital video recordings of congregants, leaders, and clergy. Since the theme of this project was “In A Word…” I chose to have fun with type. By highlighting key words around project descriptions with a subtle movie film-themed background, I was able to capture multiple elements of the WOOSH Video Project in one image.

2018 OST: Friday Night Live

Friday Night Live was a concert-style, contemporary musical Shabbat service occurring on specific Friday Evenings where everyone could gather to worship and unwind with special musical guests and a themed oneg reception (informal gathering) following services. Each Friday Night Live oneg featured a specific style of cuisine from local restaurants and/or caterers, along with adult beverages that complimented the cuisine of the evening, instead of partaking solely in the traditional Manischewitz wine and challah bread oneg. My goal for designing this logo was to merge the ideas of music and drink in a classy, elegant, intimate, contemporary way. I chose to integrate the partial outline of an acoustic guitar whose image was “finished” in the center with the outline of a glass of wine creating the sound hole and bridge of the instrument. The design and publicity would range from card handouts to online media to food labels to worship slides and more.

2018 OST: Sukkot Celebration

Sukkot Celebration

Under evening skies and a temporary shelter of palm leaves (known as a sukkah or sukkot in its plural form) complete with lights, the celebration of Sukkot happens every year after the High Holidays with family, friends, food, blessings, and the shaking of the lulav (palm branch) and etrog (citrus fruit). This holiday celebrates the Autumn harvest and commemorates the 40 years the Hebrew people spent wandering the desert after Moses led the slaves out of Egypt to freedom. The idea for this imagery was based on a snippet of the familiar images you would see looking up from the sukkah – palm branches and lights framing a clear night sky filled with numerous sparkling stars and a full harvest moon.

My first design job for Ohef Sholom Temple shortly after I was hired, was to create publicity for an upcoming Shabbaton concert featuring Mama Doni and her Bluegrass Band Nefesh Mountain. I wanted to add the spirit of Nefesh Mountain to Ohef Sholom Temple’s publicity design so I took inspiration from the cover of their album, Beneath the Open Sky, which featured stylized imagery of band members Eric Lindberg and “Mama” Doni Zasloff sitting in nature, surrounded by dogwood flowers. I utilized the publicity photos and logos supplied by the band and recreated a similar stylized dogwood flower as a nod to Beneath the Open Sky, as they would be performing songs from that album at the concert.

This logo design is for a military lifestyle blog, based on the lives of three friends who want to share their adventures across the globe with one another and the world by creating an online community for their military family and friends. The idea behind the logo is although the friends are always “adrift” from one another depending on deployment, orders, or life’s journeys, they’re still “anchored” together at heart while being adrift, hence the symbolism of the anchor, with the silhouettes of seagulls providing a sense of new adventures always on the horizon.
