For 2020, the Ohef Sholom Temple Purimshpiel Dinner Theatre presented its production of A Queen Purimshpiel – a theatrical parody retelling the story from the Book of Esther using spoofed songs from the band Queen. One of the most recognizable emblems representing the band Queen is their logo, originally drawn and created by lead singer, Freddie Mercury. The original logo featured horoscope signs that represented each member of the band (two lions for Leo, two fairies for Virgo, and a crab for Cancer) along with a royal crest of a crown surrounded by a ribbon in the shape of a “Q,” all encompassed under the wings of a phoenix. To create a parody of this, I recreated the logo in the style of the original, but changed up a few elements making it a bit more “Jewish” for Purim. In the Purim version of the logo, the lions were given furry Jewish hats called “shtreimels” to wear, the crab under the flame was changed into a menorah under flame, the two fairies were changed to hamantaschen pastries (customary Jewish desserts eaten during Purim), and the ribbon’s crest creating the “Q” was changed to a bagel with a spreading knife, all settled beneath the phoenix who was wearing his kippah (or yarmulke) head covering. This was definitely a fun project, as well as a nice little challenge to design everything in the style of the original logo, while adding elements of humor and Judaism to the artwork.
