2022 Barkan Bar Mitzvah Graphics

I had the privilege of emulating a horror-themed Bar Mitzvah graphic for a young horror movie enthusiast. Hearkening to Wes Craven’s classic slasher character Freddy Krueger from the 1984 movie “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” the theme of the Bar Mitzvah was “A Night Mitzvah on Granby Street.” (Side Note: Granby Street is a popular community destination in Norfolk, Virginia for food, arts, nightlife and culture.) I replaced the usual presentation of Wes Craven’s name with the celebrant’s name, and used a gritty, horror-based typeface for “Night Mitzvah” to embody the classic slasher film titling, juxtaposed with a clean, easily readable serif typeface for the street name. The first set of graphics featured the black, unmistakable silhouette of a standing Freddy Krueger with blade-fingers extended (one included a twist on the classic Freddy lullaby lyrics, another was without the lullaby). The second set of the graphics I created featured a 3-color and 1-color illustrated Freddy Krueger from the waist up that I drew in Illustrator. As a fan of the classic 80s Freddy horror flicks, this was a uniquely fun project to work on.
