2009 10th Annual Animalia Pet Fête

The 2009 Animalia Festival imagery was a sweet photographic moment I caught on the market, which I felt perfectly captured the innocence of the relationship between human and canine. When a market-goer’s small child happily explored a puddle on the market grounds after a fresh rain, a vendor’s sweet, curious canine companion, Batman, wanted to know what all of the merriment was about! The two were captured together in a moment of simple inquisitiveness, quiet vulnerability, and sheer joy. I thought this image would perfectly represent the unique camaraderie we have with our pets, which is what the Animalia Festival is all about!

2009 Red, White & Brew Market

2009 Red, White & Brew Market
17th Street Farmers’ Market | Richmond, Virginia

For our 2009 Market season, we wanted to showcase the local breweries, micro-breweries and wineries that were springing up in the central Virginia region, along with becoming a destination focal point for adults to unwind in Shockoe Bottom on Friday evenings. With the support of the local Shockoe Bottom Neighborhood Association and our local distribution company Brown Distributing, we were able to have a local winery or brewery featured at the market each Friday, alongside our farm market vendors, with music, and recommendations for dishes from local restaurants that paired well with the evening’s selection. The imagery used for the Red, White & Brew Market were graphic illustrations of glasses of red and white wine, along with a pilsner glass filled with beer bubbling over the edge.

2008 Holiday Market

2008 10th Annual Holiday Market
17th Street Farmers’ Market | Richmond, Virginia

For the 2008 Holiday Market, I wanted to create a classic wintry feel for the imagery. Again, using the iconic 17th Street Farmers’ Market tractor logo, I created a silhouette of the tractor with a “snow dusting” encircled with icy cool snowflakes. I wanted the imagery to be all-inclusive, simple, elegant, and market-based since the holiday season is all about bringing the community together to celebrate the “warmth” of the season. From handmade goat’s milk soaps to holiday cookies to sculptures to fresh wreaths, Holiday Market-goers are able to support local, small businesses and vendors while finding one-of-a-kind seasonal gifts, treats and decorations for the winter holidays. Supplemented with lights, hot cocoa, and even an appearance from Santa, the Holiday Market was truly a magical experience.

2008 Brunswick Stew Festival

2008 Ninth Annual Brunswick Stew Festival
17th Street Farmers’ Market | Richmond, Virginia

For the 2008 Brunswick Stew Festival, I did more of an illustrated “comic” piece as the main imagery for this event. A certain fast food chain had recently garnered popularity with its black & white cows campaigning to “EAT MOR CHIKIN,” so I thought about the chicken’s perspective in all of this, since chicken is also the staple ingredient of Brunswick Stew. Putting a humorous spin on barnyard banter, I created a conversation surrounding a “Chicken Protection Program” being instated since the Brunswick Stew Festival was upon us and came up with an adorable chicken parading around the pasture as a cow. I really loved working not only the pre-design aspect for the festival, but getting to coordinate and work the festival itself, as “Stew Masters” are a big deal and vying for top honors is an all day affair. The Stew Masters arrive early in the morning before the sun comes up on a cold fall day, and cook their delicious, secret recipe stews all day long until it’s time to sell samples to the masses during festival hours. All of the stews are then judged based on local celebrities and/or culinary judges for top Stew Master honors and a trophy, while the people get to vote on the “People’s Choice” Stew winner. Once the samples are tasted and judged, stew masters can also sell their stews in bowls or to go. While the stews are usually the main draw for this festival, everyone benefits: local businesses, the community, and most of all, the vendors who attend and sell wares and goods alongside the stew masters. It’s just a happy, feel-good festival and I had hoped to capture that sense of fun in the design itself.

2008 Shockoe on the Halfshell

2008 First Annual Shockoe on the Halfshell
17th Street Farmers’ Market | Richmond, Virginia

The 2008 Shockoe on the Halfshell Event was also a first-time festival for the 17th Street Farmers’ Market. For the visual elements of this piece, my goal was to fuse two of the most prominent staples of Shockoe Bottom – the historic cobblestone roadways and the revitalized Main Street Station – with imagery evoking an oyster festival. The oyster “bed” was in the patterning of the cobblestones and the “flesh” of the oyster was in the shape of Main Street Station, with the main clock in the tower representing the oyster’s “pearl.”

2008 Shockoe Chef Showdown

2008 First Annual Shockoe Chef Showdown
17th Street Farmers’ Market | Richmond, Virginia

Spearheading this event from its conception to execution was a ton of fun. It was a new festival where our goal was to pair fresh fare from local farmers’ market vendors with local restaurants, whose chefs channeled the spirit of friendly culinary competition and top honors. Each participating restaurant was given a basket with farm fresh ingredients (each restaurant received the same ingredients) to incorporate into their very different culinary creations. The restaurants sold samples of their best recipes for festival-goers to try and vote on their favorites for the “People’s Choice.” The grand finale was an award for “Top Chef” honors, judged by a local culinary expert. It really gave downtown restaurants the opportunity to garner more business with more regional exposure. Of course, we had vendors on-site the entire festival selling wares, as well as live music and lots of food, which was a big hit with the community all around.

2006 Brunswick Stew Festival

7th Annual Brunswick Stew Festival

17th Street Farmers’ Market | Richmond, Virginia

The 2006 Brunswick Stew Festival was the 7th annual event of its kind and my first foray into designing event media for the 17th Street Farmers’ Market in Shockoe Bottom (Richmond, Virginia). That year I designed a poster, a matching flyer (double-sided), and a set of collectible postcards. I did a photoshoot for all of the images used on the promotional materials. To make the content more intimate, I chose to showcase one of our local farmers’ market vendor’s sweet, hand-carved wooden chicken statuettes and his detailed dioramas featuring those wooden chickens.

There are subtle details in the imagery to allude to the fact that it was the 7th Annual Brunswick Stew Festival, as well as a little fun humor to add an extra element of joy to the event.
