Every couple of years, Ohef Sholom Temple does a fundraiser that benefits congregants and local business owners and puts together a Membership Directory for our entire congregation. Many of the sponsors who submit ads have theirs pre-made, but some have us do their ads in-house, so I got to show off some of my design skills creating different ads for different clients that all went into one publication, which I also laid out and designed.

2019 OST: 175th Anniversary Gala

In honor of 175 years of Ohef Sholom Temple, leadership, clergy and committee chairs fashioned a formal gala event to celebrate such a huge milestone in the congregation’s history. It was a golden event complete with live music, dinner, dancing, a raffle for exquisite prizes, a fancy cake, an ice sculpture, private label wine, and many more small touches that make such an event truly special. Using the pre-established logo for “We of Ohef Sholom,” I turned the logo golden, giving it a reflective metallic golden gradient and set it between the most recognizable symbols of the Temple: it’s unmistakeable Ionic pillars that line the entrance to the Sanctuary. With the pillars wrapped in golden ribbon and surrounded with gold, silver and bronze bits of “confetti” falling all around, the identity for Ohef Sholom Temple’s 175th Anniversary Gala was born.

Celebrating a congregation that is 175 years old also means celebrating a future and ensuring that there will still be an Ohef Sholom Temple for future generations. The Temple President organized a Capital Fundraising Campaign in honor of the 175th Anniversary of Ohef Sholom Temple, with a goal to raise $1.75 million for future capital needs, building improvements, programming and staffing. The campaign had it’s own identity, complete with imagery, a webpage, stationery, and ads.

2019 OST: A Misérable Purimshpiel

A Misérable Purimshpiel

During the Purim holiday, the largest, most anticipated production of the year is Ohef Sholom Temple’s annual Purimshpiel Dinner Theatre. Every year, a different musical, play, or theme is chosen to parody the re-telling of the Book of Esther, complete with songs that spoof the originals, while accentuating each scene with ensuing hilarity and good fun for all ages. A great “beauty pageant” is held in Esther’s honor during the play, so people – especially the kids – dress up in costume for the holiday and participate with the production.

2019’s Purimshpiel theme was to Les Misérables, calling it A Misérable Purimshpiel not because it was miserable (Purim is actually a very fun, happy, good-natured holiday) but for two reasons: 1) to parody the original Les Misérables musical and 2) because the lead actress portraying the main character Esther, was actually pregnant during the time of production (could be miserable, right?). In the tradition of parody, I did a re-creation of the Broadway playbill imagery for Les Mis, changing out the French flag with an Israeli flag, and using a stylized photo of our own “Queen Esther” in place of the character Cosette. Admittedly, this is always one of my favorite assignments to design for, as I am usually given the freedom to have as much outlandish, punny fun as I like with the designs, while delivering a nod to the original. This is one of the few instances in design where tackier is better – and it’s always amusing!

One of the most socially active clubs at Ohef Sholom Temple involves the lovely women of Ohef Sholom Temple: the OST Sisterhood. This group of women loves to join together give back to their congregation, their community, and investing in themselves through enrichment programs such as lectures, book readings, informational gatherings, self-defense, social justice initiatives, cooking for those who may be experiencing food insecurity, quilting, crafting, and assisting with scholarships, religious school or worship services.

For Ohef Sholom Temple’s 175th Anniversary and 100th Anniversary of the Sanctuary, the congregation created a legacy project to document oral history, family stories, anecdotes, memorable moments, and basically create a living snapshot of this moment in time through 3-minute digital video recordings of congregants, leaders, and clergy. Since the theme of this project was “In A Word…” I chose to have fun with type. By highlighting key words around project descriptions with a subtle movie film-themed background, I was able to capture multiple elements of the WOOSH Video Project in one image.

My first design job for Ohef Sholom Temple shortly after I was hired, was to create publicity for an upcoming Shabbaton concert featuring Mama Doni and her Bluegrass Band Nefesh Mountain. I wanted to add the spirit of Nefesh Mountain to Ohef Sholom Temple’s publicity design so I took inspiration from the cover of their album, Beneath the Open Sky, which featured stylized imagery of band members Eric Lindberg and “Mama” Doni Zasloff sitting in nature, surrounded by dogwood flowers. I utilized the publicity photos and logos supplied by the band and recreated a similar stylized dogwood flower as a nod to Beneath the Open Sky, as they would be performing songs from that album at the concert.

2017 Planet Fitness Ads

2017 Planet Fitness – Ryder Group (Hampton Roads)

While employed as a Fitness Trainer for the Planet Fitness location in Elizabeth City, NC, the Ryder Group, which is the managing company for all of the Planet Fitness locations in Hampton Roads, I was asked to do some freelance design work for their advertising around town. I created a series of MATV billboards for Planet Fitness to be displayed around Hampton Roads on a Digital Mobile Billboard MATV truck at special events and for their advertising in general. Sticking with the familiar branding of the Planet Fitness parent company, I created special billboards for the Ryder Group’s advertising needs around Hampton Roads.

In 2011, I was an Assistant Office Manager for three companies that operated out of one office: Atlantic ChemDry, Chesapeake ChemDry and United Restoration. While managing and scheduling jobs was my main position, I was also able to apply my design skills to the company’s advertising needs. Using imagery sanctioned by the parent company ChemDry, I created a mock-up for a redesigned website, created printed postcards that went out to clients, and ads that went into local publications, including the local Yellow Pages book.

2008 Shockoe Chef Showdown

2008 First Annual Shockoe Chef Showdown
17th Street Farmers’ Market | Richmond, Virginia

Spearheading this event from its conception to execution was a ton of fun. It was a new festival where our goal was to pair fresh fare from local farmers’ market vendors with local restaurants, whose chefs channeled the spirit of friendly culinary competition and top honors. Each participating restaurant was given a basket with farm fresh ingredients (each restaurant received the same ingredients) to incorporate into their very different culinary creations. The restaurants sold samples of their best recipes for festival-goers to try and vote on their favorites for the “People’s Choice.” The grand finale was an award for “Top Chef” honors, judged by a local culinary expert. It really gave downtown restaurants the opportunity to garner more business with more regional exposure. Of course, we had vendors on-site the entire festival selling wares, as well as live music and lots of food, which was a big hit with the community all around.
